Congratulations Cliff!
As solicitors who often help creators of original work protect their creations, we were very pleased to see Cliff Richard and other artists from the golden age of pop music win their fight for extending the protection of sound recording.
For many years, copyright law specified the length of time sound recordings should be protected was 50 years. This means still active musicians who recorded albums in the 1950s and 1960s would soon lose control of their works, leaving others to reproduce their music and the original artist losing rights to receive royalties.
Following a strongly fought campaign by Cliff and other artists, on the 12th September, the EU Council ruled to extend the copyright period for sound recordings from 50 years to 70 years which is excellent news for musicians who wish to protect their work.
